The executive producer of the 1980 comedy classic Caddyshack has plans for a remake. In a lengthy interview with The Hollywood Reporter posted today, producer Jon Peters revealed that, after the remake of A Star Is Born starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper is completed, the next film on the remake list is Caddyshack. THR describes the possible Warner Bros. remake as “an old guard vs. millennial golfer comedy,” and Peters reportedly has one of his friends, Jack Nicholson, in mind to play the lead.
Considering the talent involved in the original film, it’s no wonder Hollywood hasn’t already produced a Caddyshack remake by now, but that doesn’t mean attempts weren’t made. Speaking to Film School Rejects in 2012, Broken Lizard’s Jay Chandrasekhar revealed that he had been approached about the project:
I was actually approached by someone high up in the filmmaking world about remaking Caddyshack. I said, “I think people will string me up if I tried to do that.” I thought about it for a day, and I called them up and said, “I’d have loved to have had this conversation, but I could never.” And I don’t know. I don’t believe you can remake comedy films that are great and have them really work. I think you can remake serious films that were bad and make them into comedies or something with a great idea and work on it, but I don’t think you should ever remake a film that was good. I think that’s just asking for trouble.Considering Jon Peters answered The Hollywood Reporter’s interview questions next to a loaded pistol, “asking for trouble” doesn’t really seem like something he’s worried about.
