Herts Fire and Rescue have been stretched this afternoon dealing with a number of lightning strikes around the county
The first happened at lunchtime in London Colney.
The roofs of 3 terraced houses were hit - two other houses in the row have been damaged by fire and smoke.
11 fire engines were called in to deal with the blaze.
Chief Fire Officer Roy Wilsher said: "Today's storms have resulted in a number of serious incidents, which our firefighters are dealing with extremely well in very difficult conditions. The ongoing storm is making their task even more difficult and they have put themselves in precarious positions to stop fires spreading further and minimising damage to properties. Colleagues from London Fire Brigade are providing cover in the south of the county and we are grateful for their support. Please look out for friends, family members and neighbours during this time."
Other incidents caused by lighting strikes today are in Kingsmead, Waltham Cross where a semi-detached house is on fire, Furze Close, South Oxhey, Sauls Wood House, Ayot St Peter where a detached property was struck by lightning. Following an extensive search, no fire was found. A fire in Ware Road, Hoddesdon in the roof a semi-detached property is also ongoing.
