- The default tip on Instacart is five percent or the last custom percentage you chose, whichever is higher.
The drivers that deliver your Instacart orders to you are gig workers, and mainly paid through tips. This means that if you order through Instacart a lot, you should know how to manage the app's tipping tools.
For example, knowing how to change your tip. You can change your Instacart tip in two places: On the checkout page before you place your order, and in the Orders menu later.
So if you've made an order with the wrong tip, or simply want to reward your driver for a job well done, here's how to change it.
Important: Although tipping is optional, Instacart doesn't take "tip baiting" — giving a big tip at first then later changing it to zero — lightly. If you're caught tip baiting multiple times, you'll be banned from Instacart.
How to change your tip on Instacart before you order
The steps are slightly different depending on whether you're using the Instacart app or website.
In the mobile app:
1. Start arranging your order and head to the Checkout page.
2. While you're on the checkout page, scroll down to the Delivery Tip section. By default it'll be five percent of your order's price — tap Change to modify it.
3. Pick your new tip, then tap Save Tip at the bottom of the page.
4. Place your order.
On the website:
1. Arrange your order and head to the Checkout page.
2. Pick your delivery time, address, phone number, and payment method. Click Continue at the bottom of the page.
3. A page titled Say thanks with a tip will appear. Choose how much you want to tip here, then click Place order.
How to change your tip on Instacart after you order
Instacart will let you change your tip for up to 24 hours after the order arrives. But once that time passes, your payment gets processed and the tip is locked in.
Once again, you can change your tip via the mobile app or website.
In the mobile app:
1. Once you've placed your order, head back to Instacart's homepage and tap the three stacked lines in the top-left corner.
2. Select Your orders from the menu that appears, then tap the order that you want to modify.
3. Tap More, then Change tip.
4. Choose your new tip amount, then tap Next. If you're lowering your tip, you'll need to explain why.
On the website:
1. On the website's homepage, click the three stacked lines in the top-left corner.
2. Click Your orders, then click View order detail on the one that you want to change.
3. At the top of the details page, click Change tip.
4. Choose how much you want to tip, then click Next. If you're reducing the tip, you'll have to explain why as well.
Your Instacart driver will receive 100% of the tip you give.
