The cowgirl cut is straight out of the lazy girl styling handbook

While summer is all about low-maintenance styles, hair with shape and sharp contours sings a particular siren song in autumn. Case in point is the cowgirl cut, a term coined by hair stylist Luke Hersheson to describe his top-requested new season look with its shoulder-skimming lob-length and face-framing invisible fringe.

While summer is all about low-maintenance styles, hair with shape and sharp contours sings a particular siren song in autumn. Case in point is the “cowgirl cut”, a term coined by hair stylist Luke Hersheson to describe his top-requested new season look with its “shoulder-skimming lob-length” and face-framing invisible fringe.

“The cowgirl cut is rough and ready – a little imperfect but beautiful, so that's where the name came from," adds Luke, whose client list includes Victoria Beckham, Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley. “It straddles the line between masculine and feminine with just a little bit of movement.”

The cowgirl cut is also a departure from the various bob iterations – the butterfly bob, plush bob and Grace Kelly bob – that have dominated 2023 so far. While it shares the same DNA as a shag and a lob, it's a fresh adaptation. “The cowgirl cut is a cross between both, but with curtain bangs,” says Luke. Look to Alexa Chung's bedhead in the '00s for inspiration.

According to Luke, “adding texture while taking the weight out of the hair is key for the look.” It features plenty of texture through the mid-lengths – so on fine, straight hair he recommends working in a texture spray or Hersheson's new Air Dry Spray.  On thick or textured hair, it's about maintaining the definition while keeping fly-aways at bay with a styling creme (good options include Pattern Styling Cream and Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream).

As hair trends go, the cowgirl cut is all about ease rather than endless styling and shouldn't look too polished. So in true free-wheeling spirit, the cowgirl cut also works well on longer strands.

“It’s meant to be fuss-free – most of the time the less you do to your hair, the better it looks," Luke notes. "A little volume never hurts and making the most of any natural texture when rough-drying. Also blow-drying the bangs away from the face is the best way to style this one.” Better still, why not go full Western with a trending cowgirl copper hue?
