'Stargate' regular often played military characters
Character actor Don S. Davis, who often played military commanders, including General Hammond on “Stargate: SG-1,” died June 29 of a heart attack in Gibsons, Canada. He was 65.
Born and raised in Aurora, Mo., he graduated Southwest Missouri State College, served in the Army and then received a masters in theater from Southern Illinois U. He began acting while teaching at the U. of British Columbia in Vancouver and left teaching to pursue acting full time in 1987.
Davis appeared in feature films including “A League of Their Own,” “Best in Show,” “Look Who’s Talking” and “Con Air.”
His TV movie credits including “Fire on the Mountain,” “In Cold Blood” and “Prisoner of Zenda.”
He appeared in dozens of TV shows, including “Twin Peaks” on which he played Major Garland Briggs, and had recurring roles on shows including “Madison,” “Slick Air” and “Broken Badges.” His other TV credits include “”NCIS,” “The West Wing,” “The X Files,” “Northern Exposure,” “L.A. Law” and “Knots Landing.”

Although he retired in 2007 to undergo surgery for his heart condition, his recent appearances include “Tale of Two Sisters,” “Search and Rescue,” “Vipers,” “Burn Up” and “Wyvern.”
In addition to acting, he was writing a TV pilot and was an avid painter, sculptor and set designer.
He is survived by his wife, costumer Ruby Fleming-Davis and a son.
